Such a magical and enchanting place. The Italian Riveria is at it’s best in charming, historic, Cinque Terre, Italy.
On rugged bluffs overlooking the northwestern coast of Italy, Italians have spent centuries carefully constructing a masterpiece of culture directly into cliffs above the pristine, glistening emerald waters of the Ligurian Sea. Footpaths, trains and boats connect this intimate string of Italian coastal villages – cars cannot reach them from the outside helping preserve much of the charm and cultural history that makes these communities unique. The Italian “Cinque Terre” translates as “Five Lands,” representative of the primary municipalities that make up this scenic region.
The Cinque Terra is comprised of five picturesque villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The area is all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a cherished UNESCO World Heritage Site that has seen a steady rise in tourism in the Internet era of travel but still remains a charming seaside experience well worth the visit. The Cinque Terra is an easy train ride from other nearby hotspots, Florence and Pisa. For many, this will be considered the highlight of their visit to the northern Italy coast.
GETTING THERE
Your best bet is to take a train from Florence or Pisa, which is relatively nearby. Getting there by car is all but impossible, and really unnecessary since you won’t need a car once you get there and the local roads can be dangerously narrow. You can also catch water ferries / water taxies if you want to get out on the water and don’t mind the extra cost/time that it takes.
